My friend and fellow blogger, Margie, and I made what we thought would be a fun "road trip" to Omaha...15 hours later, feeling miserable after the long ride, we arrived!!
We quickly forgot about the long road trip and were overwhelmed with excitement when we got to Rosenblatt Stadium and saw the sights and landmarks that I had seen many times in previous CWS on ESPN. We, the Southern Miss Golden Eagles, were part of college baseball history!!
There were many things to do while in Omaha, I was able to meet baseball hall of famers, Joe Morgan and Rollie Fingers, as well as, Robin Ventura.
Game day was extra special, we played the Texas Longhorns, in the first game. There was more black and gold than orange and white for sure. The stadium was cheering, "U-S-M," and the team lived up to the chants. Everyone was sure of a Golden Eagle victory, but in the 8th and 9th innings, a combination of questionable calls by the umps and control issues from the bullpen, allowed the Longhorns to gain the lead given to them by a base-on-balls. Unbelievable!
When we weren't at the game, we found some other fun things to do. We were regulars at "FanFest," an area of games and activities set up for fans. Actually, for the most part it was designed for children, but I figured since I spent most of my time teaching 5 year olds I counted as a child anyway! So I joined right in, I even suited up in catchers gear that was obviously designed for a 7 year old! The most fun at FanFest was the AT&T tent. There Margie and I were able to live out our dreams of being sports announcers. We put on the head set and gave the play-by-plays for the CWS game when LSU beat Miami.
Check it out!!
Needless to say, going to the College World Series was one of the best trips ever! I hope I get to go back next year and the Eagles will be there too!
Southern Miss to the TOP!

Kelly, that was a FUN read especially since we share a similar passion for the CWS. We found it to be America at it's best; good food, friendly people, exciting competition, all done in a carnival atmosphere. You sound like a GREAT fan! I liked the quote about trees having three purposes: books, baseball bats & providing shade in order to read baseball books. That's funny!
