I'm Proud to be an American!

During the week of the 4th of July I took a fun trip to Washington, D.C.  My grandparents, my brother, Robert, and I ventured off to our nation's capital.  This is my fourth trip to DC and the city is still as impressive and spectacular as the first!

The view from the plane.

When I walked into the hotel room, I immediately got the urge to take pictures like the Pioneer Woman does, ha!  She always takes pictures of her luxurious suites, although this is your average hotel room I couldn't help myself.

The first night we were there we visited the Kennedy Center to see the musical, "Memphis".  The Kennedy Center is beautiful!!

The inside of the theatre was so beautiful.  I wanted to take pictures of everything!  This was the only one I got before I was reprimanded by the usher, oops!

"Memphis" was FANTASTIC!  I loved every moment of it!

The National Cathedral is the world's sixth largest church.  It is fabulous!

A statue of George Washington inside the Cathedral - It reads "Our First Citizen".

The "Ford's Theatre" were Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth.  We had a very knowledgeable guide that told us many intricate details about that night.

The balcony just as it looked the last night Abraham Lincoln visited.

The boarding house across the street from the theatre were Lincoln was taken and later died.

 Arlington National Cemetery

The eternal flame at the burial site of John F. Kennedy and Jackie Kennedy Onassis

Abner Doubleday - The founder of baseball

We also were able to see the "changing of the guard" at the tomb of the unknown soldiers.  This was pretty intense.  This tomb is guarded every day, 24 hours a day.  The guards change every 30 minutes, round the clock.

World War II Memorial - sits between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial.  It is a huge circular monument with a beautiful fountain.

Each state has a pillar - Louisiana born, Mississippi raised!

 Air and Space Museum

 Museum of Natural History

My favorite - the Hope Diamond!  I'll take one of those!

 American History Museum

Lou Gehrig
Baseball signed by Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth

Michelle Obama's dress from the Inaugural Ball
There were dresses from almost all of the first ladies, I loved this display.

Do you watch "DC Cupcakes" on TLC?  I'm sure you love Katherine and Sophie!  Well I do!  So I definitely had to go to "Georgetown Cupcake", and so did everyone else in DC, it was packed!

Check out this line, it was like this ALL day!  We tried to go several times thinking the line would get smaller but it never did.  Finally we just stood in line, about a 45 minute wait.

I took this photo to document that I am not the only person that takes pictures of food or waits in line for cupcakes!

These cupcakes were amazing!  Very delicious.  It is the best strawberry cupcake or cake I've ever had.  Good news, they deliver nationwide!

Marine Corps War Memorial/ Iwo Jima Memorial

The Pentagon Memorial - In memory of those who died in the September 11th attack.  This memorial is new and was one of my favorite memorials.  The families designed this memorial, each detail is symbolic to those who lost their lives.  We could not take many pictures because it is located on the grounds of the Pentagon.  Since September 11th it is a federal law that you can not take pictures of the Pentagon, so we had to be real careful.

 Lincoln Memorial

 Vietnam War Memorial

 Korean War Memorial

Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial

His is the tallest statue of a man in all of DC, standing at over 50 feet tall.

 Washington Monument
You can see the Washington Monument from EVERYWHERE!  It is always in the background of your pictures, I love this.

 Jefferson Memorial

Franklin Roosevelt had the Jefferson Memorial built in 1939.  He respected Jefferson so much that he wanted it built so that he could see it from the White House.  So there is a clear line of site from the memorial to the White House  You can see the White House in between the trees, and vice versa.

 White House (back) by day

 Oval Office.....ha!

We took a tour of the Capitol building, we begin our tour from across the street in one of the Congressional buildings.  The three Congressional buildings interlock to the Capitol building through an underground tunnel.  This was one of my favorite parts of DC.

This "star" inside the Capitol marks the center of the city, everything is marked based on the location from this point.  There is a crypt underneath were George Washington was supposed to be buried, he died before it was completed and is buried at Mount Vernon instead.

Speaker of the House - John Boehner's office.
We also were able to go into the "House of Representatives" and sit on the house floor.  We were unable to take pictures.  Also, while on the tour we met Alonzo Mourning and his family.

We had to go to a Washington Nationals game too!  They played the San Fransico Giants, Tim Lincecum pitched but the talents of Bryce Harper and the Nationals were too much for the Giants.  The Nationals won 9-3.

Screech, the mascot!

On the Fourth of July we enjoyed the annual "Independence Day Parade" on Constitutional Avenue, located between the White House and the Washington Memorial.

That night we went to the grounds of the Washington Monument for fireworks.  Oh my goodness!  I have never seen that many people in one place at one time!

Happy 236th Birthday, America!

We had a FABULOUS trip and we all enjoyed DC and our time together!
