Frosting Friday

For Thanksgiving I made an apple pie.  I searched the blog world to find the perfect recipe, I found tons of recipes but no one that was just what I was looking for.  So I compile the elements of the recipes that I liked and made my own version.  For example, I loved that Tyler Florence incorporated carmel and I liked Pioneer Woman's apple mixture but not her topping and she didn't have carmel.  She I used some of their ideas to make a Pioneer-Florence hybrid pie!

Carmel Apple Pie
2 granny smith apples, peeled and sliced
1 gala apple, peeled and slice
Toss apple slices in lemon juice
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 tablespoon flour
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 cup heavy whipping cream

Carmel Sauce
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup water
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 cup heavy whipping cream

For the pie crust, I just used Pillsbury pie shells, one for the base and one for the topping.  But there are many great recipes for homemade pie crust out there!

Directions:
Slice apples, toss lightly with lemon juice to keep them from turning colors.  Add flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and whipping cream.  Toss together.  Layer apples in pie shell.  To make the carmel sauce, heat the sugar and water stirring to dissolve.  Bring to a boil and continue to stir, approximately 10 minutes, until the mixture turns to an amber color.  Remove from heat, add vanilla and whipping cream.  Let sauce set for 2 minutes, then drizzle over apples.

Top pie with remaining pie crust, cut slits in top.  Bake at 350 degrees for 45-55 minutes.

Enjoy!
